What is Duct Tape / Cloth Tape

Duct tape gets its name from the cotton duck cloth on which it was made originally in the past. In the present times it’s usually a scrim backing pressure-sensitive tape usually with a polyethylene coating. A pressure-sensitive tape is one which does not need water or heat to be applied. Pressure is applied to stick the tape.

Duct tape can have different bases, backing, and adhesive materials. Duct tape is a genericized name and it refers to all varieties of cloth tapes for different applications. The tape is often fabricated by adding powdered Alimunium Pigment which lends the tape its distinctive silvery gray colour. However,   It can be fabricated in different colours apart from silvery grey and can be made with printed designs, patterns as well. The duct or cloth tape is often confused with gaffer tape (which is non-reflective and can be removed cleanly).

How is Duct Tape Manufactured

Modern Duct tape is manufactured from a variety of materials including cotton, polyester,  nylon, or fiberglass mesh fabric. This mesh or base provides strength to the tape. The fabric or scrim is a  very thin gauze. The scrim is laminated to a backing of low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
