What is Stationery Tape

This tape draws its history from Richard Drew at 3M company in the USA who was testing a tape to be used by painters to cover areas not to be painted. That has evolved into today’s Stationery tape or transparent adhesive tape.

In its most basic it is a polypropylene-based pressure-sensitive tape. Initially, the adhesive was a mix of oil, resins, and rubber. The current adhesive is resin-based which undergoes a chemical and physical process to convert into a bonding adhesive. The process determines the strength of the adhesive / bonding agent.

The scotch tape dispenser is also an important milestone in the history of Stationery Tape or Scotch Tape. In the old days, it was a heavy iron dispenser now replaced with the ‘snail’ which is the proprietary 3M dispenser. Scotch tape is the brand name of  3M company’s transparent tape.

It is also sold in the United Kingdom as ‘Sello Tape’ and is a genericized trademark. It also shows up in the Oxford English Dictionary.  Initially, it was called Cello Tape but later changed to Sello Tape

What is Stationery Tape Used For

The tape can be used for joining paper or cardboard, repairing paper tears. On old paper or fragile paper, or cardboard it can be only applied once and not taken off cleanly. Will damage the paper or take off bits from the cardboard surface. If it’s applied on the smooth painted surface, then it does leave some adhesive on being taken off.
