What is Masking Tape?

Masking tape is a paper-backed tape with rubber latex adhesive on a single side. It is made of a  pressure-sensitive adhesive on easy-to-tear paper.  The real secret of the masking tape is – its sensitive adhesive, which allows it to be peeled off without any residue on the applied surface and without damaging the surface.

Is Masking Tape & Painter’s Tape the Same?

There is no particular difference between masking tape and painter’s tape as masking tape is also called painters tape. It is used during painting to keep certain areas paint-free. The tape is also used to create patterns on walls or surfaces while painting. Its latex rubber adhesive provides a firm grip that prevents the seeping of paint while painting.

Different Types of Masking Tape

Masking tape varies in the strength of adhesive on the tape and is rated from 1 to 100 depending on how strong the adhesive is. A rating of 50 is the common painter masking tape. For domestic applications, a masking tape of a lesser rating is used.

It is also rated by the number of days it can be left without damaging or leaving marks or residue on the surface. The 7 and 14 days rated tapes are the most widely used and purchased.

General Purpose Masking Tape

The general-purpose masking tape is for domestic and non-industrial applications. Normal masking tape works well up to 80 degrees centigrade. The normal tape is used for bundling, splicing, labeling, packaging, and domestic painting, and supports light loads.

High-Temperature Masking Tape/Automotive Masking Tape

The high-temperature automotive masking tape is ideal for Industrial Painting applications, automotive painting, and specialty applications.  The automotive masking tape sticks to metal, glass, rubber, and plastic parts. It does not allow the paint to bleed and can withstand high temperatures without losing its adhesion. Automotive masking tape can resist up to 95 degrees centigrade and gives better results than normal masking tape/general-purpose masking tape.

This tape can be easily stuck over corners and irregular surfaces. It tears in one piece and thus provides clean paint lines.
